Helen Conahan-Dettrey, Director
Helen Conahan-Dettrey is Director of the Institute for Teaching and Learning. Helen provides literacy program evaluation and planning services, training, consultation, and coaching to school districts. She is a frequent presenter at education conferences and is widely recognized for her expertise in language, literacy, professional development and integrated systems change.
She provided content development leadership and training for the Pennsylvania Governor's Institute for Partnerships in Reading; served as the Content Development Coordinator for the Pennsylvania Department of Education's On-Line Course on Scientifically Based Reading Instruction; and was a member of the original Pennsylvania Reading First Committee. Over the course of her thirty-year career in education Helen has consistently advocated for the use of scientific evidence to guide instructional decisions. She has provided direct evidenced-based instruction to children, teenagers and adults with language, learning and reading disorders. Additionally, she provided teacher training and coaching on the topics of phonological processing, effective literacy instruction, language/learning disabilities, literacy development, and comprehensive assessment systems.

Cathryn Weiss, Associate Director
Cathryn Weiss is an Associate Director of the Institute for Teaching and Learning, with experience consulting on literacy issues including: district–wide literacy revision, professional staff development, and on-site support. She has a Master’s Degree and Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech and Language Disorders. Within the course of her career of over 30 years, she has worked directly with students, preschool through adult, providing evidence-based instruction in both spoken and written language and their links through literacy. Her experience spans both regular and special education in the areas of communication and literacy. She has been a participant in many state level projects and a member of the content development team for the Pennsylvania Department of Education online literacy courses. Additionally, she was a founding member of the Chester County Autism Support Team.
